Job Summary
Responsible to the Director of Operations and the Launch Master for the performance of maintenance and seamanship duties on board a PPA launch. 


Salary
The wage for this position is $48.72 per hour. An initial training period at the beginning is compensated at $36.54 per hour.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support boat maintenance and perform daily pre-departure checks on equipment and systems.
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance routines and general seamanship duties, including mooring, fueling, line handling, and vessel cleaning.
  • Assist with pilot transfers, including embarkation/disembarkation and marine emergency response.
  • Operate and maintain life-saving equipment; participate in person overboard drills.
  • Perform light vessel handling and maneuvering when required
  • Maintain PPA docks, shore facilities, and associated property and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned to support pilot transfer operations and vessel readiness.

 

Key Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic seamanship and boat operating skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Collision Regulations, the buoyage system, pilot-launch operations, marine emergency and first aid procedures.
  • Operating knowledge of mechanical systems on boats.
  • Ability to operate a marine VHF radio, navigation and safety equipment found on board our vessel.

 

Requirements

  • Transport Canada certificate of Medical Fitness
  • Marine Emergency Duties or equivalent
  • Marine First Aid


Work Schedule - Relief Coverage
It is essential that the successful candidate has a schedule flexible enough to work full-time during the training period to pick up relief shifts on an as needed basis following the end of the training period. The training period for a relief deckhand is seventy-two (72) hours; 6 shifts. 

  • Candidates must be a resident within the Prince Rupert area.
  • Candidates will be required to work shift work; a full shift is up to 12 hours. 
  • Candidates must be able to work any day of the week, statutory holidays and must be available on short notice.
