The Pacific Pilotage Authority is seeking a Relief On-Call Shore Engineer for our Victoria launch operations. This position is offered subject to the terms and conditions of the current Canadian Merchant Service Guild agreement.

Overview

  • Starting wage is $67.33/ hour
  • Relief employees receive 16% of gross salary, exclusive of holiday pay and overtime, in lieu of benefits and an additional 6% in lieu of vacation time
  • Successful candidates will be required to work office hours and to be available on call after hours and weekends.
  • A list of the duties and qualifications are available on request. o The successful individual must be available on short notice for relief opportunities.
  • Due to the on-call nature of the work, successful candidates must be within commuting distance of Victoria to cover shifts as needed.
  • Responsible to the Director of Operations and Chief Technical Officer for pilot boat maintenance and performance of seamanship duties.

Duties

  • Performance of boat maintenance, including checking fluid/oil levels, routine and comprehensive checks of engine and deck equipment and record keeping of the above maintenance.
  • Troubleshooting of systems. Training of crew in inspection procedures and operation of various systems. Planning and co-ordination of repairs as required. Assist with development of formal procedures for operation, checks and maintenance procedures.
  • As required, performance of seamanship duties; including operation of deck machinery/appliances, look-out and watch keeping duties and basic boat husbandry.
  • Assist, as required, in the performance of pilot-transfer duties during the pilot boarding or boarding-off of a vessel.
  • Performance of marine emergency duties, including recovery of a person in the water, first-aid and the operation and maintenance of life-saving equipment.
  • Other duties related to the operations of pilot transfers and the maintenance of property and equipment belonging to the Pacific Pilotage Authority.

Requirements

  • Valid certificates minimum Class Four Marine Engineer or higher are preferred. An equivalent combination of certifications and experience may be considered.
  • Candidates must pass a medical screening, including drug and alcohol screening in line with a recruitment process for a safety sensitive position.
  • It is essential that the successful candidate be a reliable self-starter and team player who is able to assume responsibility for maintenance duties, work collaboratively, and maintain calm in stressful situations.
